Thud and Beauty
Customer Questions
Just a couple of questions regarding OTK paddles. Looking to buy a couple and hoping you could recommend some.
First, which would give the "thuddiest" impact. I'm assuming it would be the heaviest/hardest wood? For this OTK paddle, aesthetics don't matter, just the heavy thud.
Also, for a second one, of all the most beautiful, "grainiest" woods you have - which one would be the heaviest? So, the look of the paddle would be the first priority and then the heavy thud would be second in terms of importance.
Great questions!
We recommend the Boudoir in Jatoba for the thuddiest OTK style paddle. Jatoba has the highest density of all the woods we carry. Both the Boudoir and Hair Brush styles in Jatoba are surprisingly heavy for their size.
For beautiful wood grains, my personal preference is Black Walnut (darker wood) or Hickory (light-colored wood). Black Walnut tends to have unique swirls of light and dark-colored wood grain. Selecting the placement of the swirls is an artful process we balance together with safety and durability.
Black Walnut wood can be absolutely gorgeous but it doesn't pack quite the punch that Hickory carries. Hickory is a light-colored wood that can have interesting grain patterns. Our extensive sanding and buffing process coupled with the high density, give Hickory an impressive, glassy shine.
